The Remix Years
Mixing Board
R · E · M · I · X  —  Where your focus goes

Five tracks. Six moments. One life, remixed.

Set how much of yourself each track gets, from 0 to 20 — five years ago, today, and out to ten years from now.

The board adds the five areas together to indicate a total intensity during each time period.

There is no right answer. Some people will want to keep overall intensity just as high, but with a different mix; others might want more free time in their next phase and look for a declining total intensity.

Watch out for totals that drift too high and might not be realistic, or too low and might feel too thin.

Harmonies

one activity, several needs

There is a free lunch in Remix, and we call it a Harmony. A Harmony lets a single activity meet several needs at once: yoga with a friend (R+M), walking meetings (E+M), an impact project you share with your spouse (R+I), paid work that also has real impact (E+I), or a business with a good friend that does good in the world (R+E+I) — join as many tracks as the activity truly serves. Each one takes its points off the total in the moments where it applies, once for every extra track it joins, and never more than the smallest of those tracks.

The story behind the moves

what changed, or what will

Between each pair of moments, write the moves that explain the shift — the decision, the habit, the person, the project. The chips show which tracks moved and by how much.

What is my X-Factor?

what did you always mean to get to?

The thing you kept your eye on is still there — a craft, a faith, a place, a passion. Name it, say why it matters, and describe what it would look like to finally pursue it for no reason other than that you love it.

Put yourself in your future self’s shoes

what would tell you it worked?

Picture yourself one year and three years from now. What visible measures would make you confident you hit the targets on your board? For example: walked my son to school two or three times a week; worked out four times a week and lost 20 pounds; earned $X extra from paid advisory work. Think about what would make you satisfied — and where it’s relevant, what others would look for. What would make your parents or your kids say you had really raised R as much as you meant to?

Height is intensity

0 means the track gets none of you; 20 means it gets everything you have. Most full lives run each track somewhere between 6 and 16.

The total is the tell

Five tracks at 20 add to 100 — nobody lives there for long. A total near zero means drifting. The green band in between is a life that is full without being frantic.

Harmonies support your Remix

Where one activity feeds two tracks, you get the intensity without paying for it twice. Finding more of them is often the whole game.
